I, Rachel married in 1988 only to discover that my husband did not want children. It took me six months to decide at a rational level to accept his decision and stay married, but a further five, extremely painful years to begin to learn to live emotionally with the fact that I would never be a mother, a process which is ongoing. I have a degree in Law from Warwick University and initially practised as a solicitor in the City, before changing career. Since 1987, I have run my own consumer research consultancy. I’m committed to supporting childless women and informing society of the issues arising. I give talks and lectures on the subject to the public, medical and healthcare professions, and can be contacted at ormrodqual @ aol.com

I, Louise would have liked to have had children but I was never in the right relationship at the right time. I read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University, and for many years worked in financial services. In 2001 I decided to take advantage of the lack of responsibilities in my life, and sold my house, gave up my job and embarked on a career break.

The two of us met in Autumn 2000 on a holiday on the Greek island of Skyros. Although we have both studied and taken part in various types of therapy, we are in no sense professionals. Our main ‘qualification’ for writing this book is that we are both childless through circumstances rather than choice and, as such, feel it is important to share our stories and experiences in a world where to talk about childlessness is often very difficult, if not taboo.
